AL awards grant to help sexual assault victims (WSFA 12 Montgomery)

Gov. Bob Riley has awarded a $25,000 grant to a nonprofit organization that assists victims of sexual assault in four east Alabama counties. The grant to Rape Counselors of East Alabama, based in Opelika, will help provide support services to victims in Chambers, Lee, Macon and Tallapoosa counties.

Chambers County Sheriffs Major George Melton told the Opelika-Auburn News Monday afternoon that the deputy, Sgt. Shannon Rollins, is in stable condition in the ICU at Lanier Hospital. The suspect in the shooting, Noah White, 24, of Chambers County, is also in the ICU at Lanier Hospital, Melton said. His condition was not available.

The Scottsboro varsity boys track and field team notched a 17th-place finish in the highly competitive Hoover Open on Saturday. Hoover won the event with 165.60 points with Opelika claiming the runner-up spot.
