The Auburn - Opelika Census Division was established in 1980 by the Alabama Department of Public Health and Human Services (ADHHS) and the Auburn County Board of Elections. This allowed Auburn University, renamed in 1960, to host more home games, creating a strong tourist component in Auburn's economy.
