Golden Cherry is a classic hotel in historic Opelika, known for its basic amenities. Bamaco Bingo opened in 2009 with more than 800 machines installed and announced plans for 5,000 machines. Three other small bingo halls, including one that shares a room with a car repair shop, are also located in Fairfield. The first of these, Legacy Bingo Hall at the Olde Towne Hotel, opened on March 1st, 2009, followed by Legacy Bingos in March 2010.
There are also facilities in Wetumpka, Atmore and Montgomery, where a new high-rise is planned. The working group closed Cross River Bingo Hall at the Olde Towne Hotel in Opelika and Legacy Bingos in Montgomery in 2010.
The Jefferson County district attorney has used this rule to justify the closure of Cross River Bingo Hall at the Olde Towne Hotel in Opelika and Legacy Bingos in Montgomery. Riley then announced plans to reactivate the task force, but all the halls there were immediately closed and the Jeffersons County district attorney, which includes Fairfield, said their machines had been seized.
In March 2010, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that Riley had no authority to convene the task force and that the power was with Attorney General Troy King. The Alabama Supreme Court has ruled that Riley has no authority under Alabama law to appoint an anti-gambling task force.
Bessemer, Alabama, has a bingo hall, but its legality was called into question after the city council voted against approving the hall and the mayor opposed gambling. A ruling in a lawsuit against the Walker County sheriff found that the machines at the county hall were illegal and that it was forced to close.
After exhausting all legal avenues, a state task force closed the hall and the bingo parlour reopened, sidelined by emergency workers, despite the city's previous ordinance allowing and regulating such halls.
After Governor Bob Riley created a task force to combat gambling in early 2010, most but not all of the salons closed. The hall was closed and reopened on 12 March 2010, when the working group declared the ban on bingo and other gambling facilities in downtown Opelika invalid.
